Morning on the Towpath

7.27.14: On an overcast, humid morning we went for a 15-miler along the C&O Canal Towpath. A great place for long runs, the towpath allows you to escape the city within a matter of miles and become absorbed in nature. Beginning in Georgetown, we headed northwest and on this morning, saw a couple of blue herons looking for breakfast in the canal. Along the towpath, you can see several of the old locks as well as the lock houses that were home to the lock keepers along the canal.

The towpath starts in Georgetown and travels nearly 185 miles to Cumberland, Maryland. Over the years, I’ve covered many of the miles closer to DC, but hope to explore some of the points farther west in the future!
