About

A geographer by birth and a city planner by profession, I’ve always had a keen interest in observing the world around me. Generally speaking, geographers and planners tend to satisfy their interests by taking pictures of these places in the world around them. This isn’t necessarily photography in the artistic sense; rather, the photography of geographers and planners tends to take on more of a documentary quality. We possess an innate desire to see new places, and photography allows us to capture the natural and built environment of these places.

I am also a runner. I have spent over half of my life engaged in distance running of one form or another, currently focusing on half-marathons and marathons. Training for distance events involves many hours and miles, providing a geographer/planner a great number of opportunities to see new places on foot. I’ve had the chance to run in places as varied as the the Art Deco hotels in Miami Beach, through the traffic-clogged streets of L.A., and across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. When on these trips I have often taken a camera with me, but I’ve also run in places less distinguished but equally interesting, taking with me only the pictures that I have in my mind.

snap.bike.run seeks to capture these experiences, both iconic and ordinary, to see where endurance can take you. In addition to running, I’ve also done some duathlons and will be trying a few triathlons in 2016. As such, pictures on this site will capture runs, bike rides, as well as sightseeing at races both near and far. All pictures are taken with an iPhone 5, since I am not a photographer with a fancy camera, and even if I was, it would be hard to run with one! I don’t plan on adding Instagram-like filters or manipulating these pictures to achieve artistic effect, as I am trying to capture the essence of the places I visit as they appear in person. As the collection evolves, a map will illustrate the geography of these places, literally showing where endurance can take you.
