Brew City

8.6.15 – 8.8.15: In early August we traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin since my husband was competing in the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. He qualified in another race earlier in the summer, and we decided that this was as good of an excuse as any to visit a new city! During our time there, I was able to get in a few runs, as there is a well-connected network of trails along Lake Michigan and some of the city’s rivers. I also explored some of the neighborhoods to the north of downtown, which contain several of the city’s landmarks.

Milwaukee definitely feels like the Midwest, containing elements of other Midwestern cities like Chicago, Cleveland, and Columbus. One of the city’s major defining elements is its brewing heritage. Once home to many of the country’s largest breweries (including Pabst, Schlitz, Miller, and Blatz), there are now a number of craft breweries such as the Milwaukee Brewing Company, Lakefront Brewery, and the Water Street Brewery that continue this heritage. In between running and race preparation, we had a chance to visit each of these breweries and were impressed with the wide variety of beers. With great views of Lake Michigan and a easily walkable downtown, Milwaukee was a fun long weekend visit and great triathlon venue!
