UCI Road World Championships

9.26.15-9.27.15: In late September we took a mini-roadtrip to see the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia. This event, held on a yearly basis, hadn’t been held in the United States since 1986! We were there the weekend of the men’s and women’s road races, which took place on a circuit throughout Richmond’s downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. While watching the races, we ran around the circuit to check out several noteworthy parts of the course. Some of these vantage points are captured in the following pictures.

Of these, the most entertaining spots to watch were the places with the steepest hills! The first was Libby Hill Park, which featured a winding cobblestone hill overlooking the James River. The second, the 23rd Street Hill, was a steep cobbled grade lasting a block that slowed the peloton to a near crawl. These were definitely the loudest and most festive cheering points on the circuit, making for an exciting vantage point from which to view the races. Next year the event travels to Qatar…hopefully it won’t be another 30 years before it returns to the United States!
