Ironman Louisville

10.9.15-10.11.15: In mid-October we traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, where my husband competed in his first full-distance Ironman triathlon. We arrived two days before the race, allowing me a few days to go out and explore the town. The first day there, I explored some of the trails along the Ohio River, seeing some public art along with a memorial to Abraham Lincoln. The next morning, I revisited the path along the river, crossing over the Big Four Bridge to Jeffersonville, Indiana, taking in a different vantage point of the city.

The race was held on a Sunday, with a swim in the Ohio River and the bike leg traveling east to Oldham County, through small towns and horse farms. I saved this week’s 12-miler for my husband’s run leg, which began along the Ohio River and passed historic neighborhoods on a route south of town. On this run, I was able to see a number of historic houses, along with Churchill Downs in the distance. After two laps, the race concluded at Fourth Street Live, an entertainment district in the heart of the city that provided a vibrant backdrop to the finish. I was able to see my husband as he finished his run up Fourth Street, in an overall time of under 12 hours! It was an inspiring event to watch…perhaps enough to get me to learn how to swim so I can try it sometime!

  1. I’d recommend doing one at least once. I feel totally satisfied after once, though! The experience is unbelievable, but the training is life-consuming.
